Subscription Legal Services

SUBSCRIPTION LEGAL SERVICES

Perfect for anyone thinking: "I wish I could just call my lawyer without worrying about the bill."

Subscription plans are structured as recurring true retainers. A monthly fee reserves attorney access, then actual work is billed based on time used, with steeply discounted rates applied under the subscription. Like having a lawyer on speed dial, without the anxiety of watching the billable hour clock tick.

At a glance:

β†’ Monthly subscription reserves attorney access
β†’ Legal work billed separately at steeply discounted rates
β†’ Designed for startups and growing companies
β†’ Three-month commitment requested, then month-to-month

WHO SUBSCRIPTION SERVICES ARE FOR

Subscription legal services work best for:

  • Growing companies needing regular legal support but can't justify (or afford) full-time in-house counsel
  • Entrepreneurs wanting predictable legal budgeting with flexibility to scale usage up or down
  • Startups in active growth mode dealing with contracts, hiring, fundraising prep, and operational legal questions
  • Businesses valuing prevention over crisis management and wanting a lawyer who knows their business intimately

This model is especially well-suited for California, New York, and Delaware startups seeking fractional general counsel support or a monthly business lawyer subscription without hiring in-house.

HOW IT WORKS

Reserved Access + Usage Billing

Each subscription includes two components:

  1. Reserves attorney access, subject to reasonable scheduling and professional obligations.

  2. Legal work billed as used, based on time spent at a discounted rate of $50/hour. Additional time beyond the included hours is billed at tier-specific rates.

Four Subscription Tiers

Each tier includes a defined amount of time per month that is billed at $50/hour when used. Additional time beyond included hours is billed at higher tier-specific rates.

WHY SUBSCRIPTION LEGAL SERVICES MAKE SENSE

Predictable Budgeting

Know exactly what baseline legal spend will be each month. No surprise invoices, no bill shock after a busy month.

Lower Effective Rates

Included hours are billed at $50/hour, a significant discount. Even excess hours remain at professional rates that reflect the ongoing relationship.

Preventative Legal Support

Monthly check-ins and ongoing availability mean catching issues before they become expensive problems. Easier (and cheaper) to review a contract before signing than to litigate a dispute later.

No "Ticking Clock" Anxiety

How many times has hesitation to call a lawyer stemmed from not wanting to get billed for a "quick question"? Subscription services remove that mental friction.

Deep Business Knowledge

The longer the relationship, the deeper the understanding of business model, industry, goals, and risk tolerance. That means faster, better advice over time.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: What happens if not all included hours are used in a month?

A: Unused hours don't roll over. The subscription fee reserves access. Think of it like a gym membership. Paying for access and availability, not just for hours used.

Q: Can tiers be upgraded or downgraded?

A: Yes. Subscription arrangements can be adjusted if needs change. Changes take effect at the next monthly billing cycle.

Q: What if more hours than the tier includes are needed?

A: No problem. Included hours are billed at $50/hour. Hours beyond the monthly allocation are billed at tier-specific rates shown in your Services Contract. A separate invoice for all usage will be provided monthly.

Q: What are typical response times?

A: Response times depend on scope, urgency, and existing commitments, but subscription clients benefit from certainty of access. Of course, response times must be subject to ethical obligations to other clients.

Q: Can subscriptions be cancelled?

A: Subscriptions are intended to begin with a three-month initial good-faith commitment by the client. Of course, either party may terminate with notice, subject to applicable ethical obligations of the attorney. Subscription fees already paid are not refundable as they reserve attorney access, but no charges will apply for future months after termination.

Q: Can a client have a subscription arrangement and also engage services under other billing arrangements?

A: Yes. Certain services may also be provided under alternative billing arrangements, depending on scope and circumstances. Any such services would be addressed separately and documented in writing.

Q: Are clients outside California and New York accepted?

A: Subscription services are designed primarily for California- and New York-based startups and businesses. Clients frequently operate Delaware entities or other out-of-state structures, which can typically be handled depending on scope and applicable law.

Q: How to know which tier is right?

A: Schedule a free consultation to discuss typical legal needs. Most early-stage startups with 1-5 employees start with Review & Advise. Companies with 10+ employees or active growth often need Counsel Plan or Executive Access.
